Golf
I ended up shooting a 76 on Friday at Lakewood with my grandpa, one stroke above my goal of 75. Disappointingly, I had yet another three-putt par. My eagle putt came up a good six feet short. If there is one thing I have learned in the past two rounds, it is NEVER LEAVE EAGLE PUTTS SHORT. He and I are playing again (the third round in a week) tomorrow. I am keeping the same goal of 75.

I’ve been meaning to make a few posts over the past few days but haven’t gotten to them yet— posting on the blog just hasn’t fit into the schedule very well. One thing I can say is that I have been having a great time at home. Today my friend Art (who plays for the Chico State golf team) and I went to the driving range at Eldo and hit some balls and had a putting contest...

Wifi on the bus
Awesome. I can get some reading done while on the way from Oxford to London (the Oxford Tube). I posted those last three photos from the bus as well. The only limitation is the battery life on the notebook—I don’t have one of those three pronged UK converters. I’m off to London to see Max for breakfast, then he has to study for exams at LSE so I will on my own for the day. I want...

Oxford, England
This will be a short post because I need to get some sleep, but I promise I will make a longer post when I have more time to write about the happenings since leaving Sevilla this morning. I am in Oxford, England right now, staying at my friend Stephan’s apartment. I landed in Gatwick, took a train to London where I met Stephan, and then spent the rest of the day and night in London until we...

The last day
is today. I’m packing right now, then meeting Rich, and at 8:30 we are going to go to the Carbonaria (a tapas bar) where our school is having a send-off. Three of my four teachers will be there and all of my classmates that have yet to leave. It should be fun—free tapas and beer for a few hours. I can’t believe how fast this day crept up on us (cliche, I know, but so true). Four...

– an excerpt from an email from a member of our triathlon team at Cal. If you haven’t done Bay to Breakers, you should. I would add it to any life list—last year Juliana and I went as smirfs and helped push our friend up the hills of SF while he was on skis rigged with roller blade wheels,...

Finance Problem
Here is a sample problem for my final exam in finance that I have in a few hours. GBP is the British pound and SWF is the Swiss franc. Given: Arbitrage when the forward discount is higher than the interest rate differential Currency market: Spot rate: 0.392/0.393 GBP/SWF Forward rate: 0.396/0.397 GBP/ SWF Monetary market: GBP 3-months: 6.25/6.50% SWF 3-months: 3.75/4.00% ...

Thanks, WTO
Your webpage explaining the dispute settlement mechanism is surprisingly easy to understand. Hopefully I will do better on my final exam tomorrow because of it.

A thought
Living with this bird nested in my window sill got me thinking—given that the only swallow nests I’ve ever seen have been on manmade bridges and buildings, where did they live before humans started building? Rock outcroppings? Given how suitable manmade locations there are for swallows today, are swallows more common now than they used to be?

Last night
…was one of the best nights I’ve had in Sevilla. One of our housemates, Britta (she’s the Alaskan) left today, so last night we all met up at a new bar by the river. Everyone from our residencia was there, and a bunch of other friends came by for drinks and to hang out. Britta knew the bar owner’s nephew, so we had the entire place to ourselves—it was awesome. We felt...

100 residents wake up to find their tires slashed... →
Yikes! I just read this article in the Daily Breeze. Our neighbor and good friend Dan Dixon (fireman Dan, for his July 4th leadership role) is quoted in the article—I hope Dad’s car didn’t get slashed! I’ll call tomorrow to find out… UPDATE: Thankfully no one at our end of the block got their tires slashed. As far as suspects, has anyone interviewed the owner of...

Long Beach native and Wilson alumni Paul Goydos almost won The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass today. He had to get up and down on the 18th but missed his putt, making bogey. He went into a playoff with Sergio Garcia and started on the island green, par-three 17th. Unfortunately, his tee shot went into the lake and Sergio won. Bummer! He still made $1,026,000…not bad. Berkeley alum...

All-Nighter
It is 7:40 AM—the sun is out, the bird nesting on my window sill is awake and squaking, and I am just now going to bed. I had to finish preparing for my presentation in finance, which is a comparison of the NASDAQ and Tokyo stock exchanges. I have to be on the bus in 3 hours. File this under “poor time management.”
