Chico trip wrap-up
So what I thought was going to be a short, one-night stay to see Art and his wife Dacia and caddy for him, turned into a solid 3 night, 4 day stay. We were just having too much fun for it to end after 24 hours!
I caddied for Art on Monday morning at Butte Creek Country Club (what a name!) in the US Amateur qualifier. Art didn’t play his best (76-76), but everyone, myself included, was just...

Camping this weekend
Jules and I are camping near Tahoe this weekend, just south of Truckee at Silver Creek off Highway 89, along the Truckee River. We are taking our bikes to ride to the lake, which is only 7 miles away according to my estimates from the Goog. We are leaving really early in the morning tomorrow, so if you don’t hear much from me in the next couple days, its hopefully because I am enjoying the...
Have you seen this?!?!
53-year-old Greg Norman and David Duval, who hasn’t won a tournament since 2001, are in the top five on the leaderboard at the British Open right now. Who would have thought? Both players were at one point the #1 players in the world, but Norman has since aged and is well past his prime and Duval hasn’t even cracked the top 15 in any event since 2001. After his last win, which was the...
Clif weekend
This weekend I worked my first event at Clif Bar, which was at Costco in SF. Each day we worked from an hour before opening until closing—44 hours in four days! It was an unusual event, as most events are just a few hours and are outdoors at marathons, bike races, concerts, etc. I learned a lot about Costco—on weekdays, about 4,000 customers come through the store EACH DAY. On the...
A new study about how golfers perceive the size of... →
This study confirms what my Grandpa and I have talked about before, which is that when you are playing really well, the hole looks huge.
To clarify the results, the researchers had golfers putt on a traditional putting mat in a lab. The golfers either judged the hole size from memory after putting or did so while viewing the hole. In both scenarios, participants whose putts ended up closer to...
Man designing Camry hybrid works self to death →
Ha, I find this the night before I start a four-day stretch of 12 hour shifts at Clif Bar! Hopefully I on Sunday night I will be in better shape than the Japanese man.
4 out of 5 sunscreens inadequate, study finds →
An excerpt:
Many medical experts are starting to question the efficacy of sunscreen in fighting cancer, despite protests from an industry that stands by its products.
“There is no evidence that sunscreens work against melanoma,” said Dr. Marianne Berwick, who specializes in melanoma and heads the Division of Epidemiology at University of New Mexico.
Then the rebuttal from the...

Valverde wins 1st Tour de France stage →
The Tour has started, and it is sure to be a good one—most of the top guys are out because of doping allegations. This should open up the race to some new faces, and hopefully they aren’t doing drugs.
Giants game
The Giants ended up winning last night by 1, with a late rally in the top of the ninth by the Cubs that came up short. The Cubs are leading their division, and the Giants are bad, so it was a big upset. Thanks a lot to Monica for inviting us! That was awesome!
Ha! My cousin Nora invited me to another Giants game tonight—I wish I could go! Two in a row would be pretty great.
Powerset cashes in
Remember Powerset, the company I wrote a post about last week? Well, they got bought by Microsoft today for $100 million. Here is the Techcrunch article. Here is the company’s blog post about it. Here is Microsoft’s post about it (on their Live Search blog). Hopefully my teacher from last fall, who advised the company, made some good money on the deal!
